James Blunt has pushed back against online claims that he was the British singer-songwriter at the centre of a disturbing yacht encounter described by Hayden Panettiere in her memoir.

The speculation grew after photos of Blunt and Panettiere together in Cannes resurfaced online following the actress' death at 36.

Journalist Dean Piper shared an article that says Blunt could not have been the man described by Panettiere, who detailed the encounter in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May 2026.

Panettiere wrote that she was 18 when a woman she trusted brought her onto a yacht and led her to a cabin, where she found an unnamed British singer in his 30s.

She described the situation as deeply unsettling and said that she eventually left after realising she did not want to take part in what had already been arranged.

James Blunt Linked to Story

The 52-year-old You're Beautiful singer from Wiltshire, England, became the focus of online speculation because he and Panettiere were photographed together in Cannes in 2009.

The images showed the pair attending an amfAR charity event and later appearing together on a boat, prompting some social media users to connect the pair to Panettiere's account in her memoir.

However, former Daily Mirror columnist Dean Piper's account challenges that theory. He pointed to the timing of the photographs, saying Panettiere was 19 when the images were taken, contrary to the description of an encounter that happened when the actress was 18.

'Guys, it only takes the smallest of AI searches to find out that in May 2009, when the pictures of Blunt and Panettiere were taken, she was 19, almost 20. So, if the incident happened when she was 18, Blunt's not your guy to start with,' Piper wrote in WTF with Dean Piper on Substack.

Piper also noted that Panettiere's account suggested she had not previously known the man involved and left the yacht after the incident. 'And as she says she hadn't met the man before the incident, and that she fled the boat immediately after, it takes nothing to work out that the cabin incident was the first and last time she met the man.

'So, pictures of Blunt and Panettiere at the amfAR charity event and together on the boat again the next day (below) mean only one thing – he's really not your man,' Piper wrote.

Blunt Shares Defence on Social Media

Blunt appeared to respond to the speculation on Monday by posting a link to Piper's Substack article on X, accompanied by an eye emoji. The piece, titled 'Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt - An Internet Lynching', argues that the photographs and timeline do not support the claim that Blunt was the unidentified singer in Panettiere's account.

Piper also recalled that Panettiere and Blunt were seen together more than once around the time of the Cannes event. According to his account, the two were photographed at the charity gathering and, the following day, on a boat. According to him, that sequence does not fit Panettiere's description of an encounter with a man she had not met before and did not see again.

'In 2009, in my capacity as a showbiz columnist, I wrote an article about Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt at the amfAR charity event in Cannes. They'd arrived together, had been flirty throughout and had gone to the afterparty together. They were photographed on a boat the next day, smiling and having fun,' Piper recalled.

Blunt has made his position clear by directing attention to evidence challenging claims that he was the singer referred to in Panettiere's memoir, rather than identifying who it was.

The man described in her memoir remains unnamed, while the singer continues to reject the online theory connecting him to the incident.
