'Game of Thrones' Star Kit Harington Takes Over Gilderoy Lockhart Role in HBO's 'Harry Potter' After Recasting

HBO has recast Gilderoy Lockhart for its upcoming 'Harry Potter' series, with 'Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington officially taking over from Nicholas Hoult as the Hogwarts professor in Season 2.

Hoult was only announced as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher earlier this month, but he has now exited the production because of scheduling conflicts. Harington will step into the role as the HBO adaptation moves on to 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'.

The recasting comes just months before the series is due to debut, adding another unexpected twist to HBO's attempt to bring J.K. Rowling's books to television.

Kit Harington Steps in as the New Gilderoy Lockhart

Harington is best known for playing Jon Snow in HBO's 'Game of Thrones', the role that made him an international star. His casting as Lockhart also marks another major collaboration between the actor and HBO, following his work on 'Game of Thrones' and 'Industry'.

Interestingly, Harington already has experience portraying Lockhart, although audiences have not yet seen him play the character on screen.

The actor previously voiced Gilderoy Lockhart for the full-cast audiobook edition of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', released in 2025. That means his new live-action casting is not his first encounter with the Hogwarts professor.

Lockhart is one of the most memorable characters introduced in the second 'Harry Potter' book. A celebrity wizard famous for his supposed heroic exploits, he becomes Hogwarts' new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher despite being far less capable than his reputation suggests.

Why Nicholas Hoult Left The Series

Hoult's departure appears to have been caused by scheduling difficulties rather than a creative disagreement. The actor was released from his deal after HBO was unable to accommodate his existing commitments.

Hoult is currently one of Hollywood's busiest franchise stars, having played Lex Luthor in James Gunn's 'Superman' and set to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel 'Man of Tomorrow'.

He is also known for his previous work as Beast in the 'X-Men' franchise.

His departure came remarkably quickly. Hoult's casting as Lockhart had only been announced on 12 August, making the subsequent recasting a swift change for a major television production.

For HBO, however, Harington provides a potentially seamless replacement, particularly given his existing connection to the character.

When Will HBO's 'Harry Potter' Arrive on Screen?

The first season of HBO's 'Harry Potter' series is scheduled to premiere on 25 December 2026, with the opening season adapting 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Season 2 will then move into the second book, 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', bringing Lockhart into the story as one of the central adults at Hogwarts.

Production on the second season is expected to begin this autumn. The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer has been cast as Professor McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Francesca Gardiner serves as series developer and showrunner, with Mark Mylod among the executive producers. Jon Brown, who worked on the first season, has also been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2.

Another Major Role for the 'Game of Thrones' Star

For Harington, the role represents another high-profile television project following his defining performance as Jon Snow. His arrival also gives 'Harry Potter' fans an opportunity to see the actor adopt a very different personality.

Rather than the brooding and battle-hardened Jon Snow, Harington will play a flamboyant celebrity wizard whose confidence dramatically exceeds his actual abilities. The recasting may have been driven by circumstances, but Harington's previous experience voicing Lockhart makes the choice particularly fitting.
