Manchester United are considering a move to sign Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto this summer, according to Le10Sport.

The 22-year-old is a graduate of the Spanish club's famous academy La Masia and is believed to be one of the brightest prospects to come out of Barcelona's youth setup. He is dubbed as the next Xavi and is set to replace the Spain international at Camp Nou.

Roberto made just one start in the La Liga last season and is believed to be frustrated with the lack of playing time. The Spaniard has one year left on his contract and is yet to sign a new deal.

The Old Trafford club has long been monitoring the central midfielder and are reportedly keen on landing the player. United are aware of Roberto's unhappiness over not featuring regularly for Barcelona.

The Catalan giants already completed the signing of central midfielder Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla earlier in the summer transfer window. The arrival of the Croatian international will see Roberto drop further down the pecking order.

Barcelona are aware of the midfielder's potential and are now willing to tie down Roberto to a new deal in order to fend off interest from clubs across Europe.

Louis van Gaal's side have already completed a deal for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw. United are still believed to be interested in Roberto. However, their league rivals Arsenal are also monitoring the Barcelona man.

The same report also claims United could face competition from Italy as Inter Milan are also in the frame for Roberto's signature. The Marca suggests the player's representative has already held talks with Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta to discuss the midfielder's future last month.

The Camp Nou club will open talks over signing an extension with Roberto in the coming days. Should Roberto snub a chance to sign a new contract, Barcelona could cash in on the player this summer, rather than letting him leave for free next summer.
