Manchester United are refusing to push Wayne Rooney into signing a new deal with the club despite the striker reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea.

Rooney is entering the final 18 months of his contract with the Red Devils and after privately pushing for a move in the summer, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming he handed in a transfer request last season, it would appear the club has work to do to convince the England international that his long term future is at Old Trafford.

Chelsea were very public in their admiration of Rooney with Jose Mourinho praising the star despite having a somewhat disappointing 2012-13 campaign. But this season Rooney is back on-form and will no doubt be a subject of interest for the Blues manager once more in the coming transfer window.

But despite reports circulating that Rooney has been in talks with United over a new deal the Daily Mirror claims that the club are refusing to rush anything at this stage, arguing that the club don't believe the striker is unhappy at the club anymore.

One of Rooney's issues at United was believed to be with Ferguson whom he reportedly has a frosty relationship with after the Scot claimed he asked to leave the club. David Moyes also has a chequered past with Rooney but the pair have resolved their differences and the manager has got the frontman back on track in his career this season as a result.

With a World Cup edging closer Rooney's mind will likely be on continuing to improve in order to perform well for England. While in the last season Robin van Persie took centre stage in United's push for silverware in the current campaign it would appear that Rooney has taken the spotlight back. The star has been credited with what limited success the club have enjoyed so far as they adjust to a new manager for the first time in 26 years and could be willing to stay if he feels he will continue to be appreciated at Old Trafford.
