Pastor John-Paul Miller's Sex 'Obligation' Sermon Resurfaces After Mica Miller's Abuse Claims

Pastor John-Paul Miller's sermon teaching that sex was a 'non-negotiable obligation' within marriage has resurfaced following Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife, which revisits allegations that his late wife, Mica Miller, experienced sexual and coercive abuse during their marriage.

The documentary places Miller's recorded teachings about marital sex alongside accounts from people close to Mica, bringing renewed attention to the allegations she made before her death.

John-Paul Miller's Sex 'Obligation' Sermon

Miller's recorded preaching is among the material examined in the documentary. Netflix reports that he taught that sex was a 'non-negotiable obligation' within a wife's role as her husband's 'helpmate.'

In sermon footage examined by the documentary, Miller also warned about the consequences of sexually refusing a husband and linked marital sex to resisting temptation.

The teachings have drawn renewed attention because of allegations concerning what Mica allegedly experienced during the marriage.

Mica Miller's Sexual Abuse Allegations

Mica made allegations of abuse in a divorce affidavit filed before her death.

'Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of - emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically,' she wrote, according to Netflix's account of the documentary.

Mica's friends also described more specific allegations in the documentary. Erica Rahr said Mica told her that she and Miller had sex four times a day, while Charlotte Korn recalled Mica saying they engaged in something sexual every day because she wanted to prevent Miller from 'wandering outside of the marriage.'

The documentary also recounts allegations that Mica was pressured to increase her sex drive and that Miller woke her when she refused sex. These claims are presented as allegations and have not been established as findings against Miller.

Miller has denied the abuse allegations and declined to participate in the Netflix documentary.

Why the Sermon Is Being Revisited

The documentary places Miller's recorded teachings about sex alongside testimony from people close to Mica who described what they characterised as controlling and sexually coercive behaviour. Netflix says the series draws on Mica's journals, text messages, church footage and accounts from friends and family.

Mica had also told a police officer she was 'afraid for her life' about a month before her death, according to reporting cited in the documentary.

The documentary presents the sermon alongside accounts from Mica's friends and family, but those accounts remain allegations rather than established findings against Miller.

Mica Miller's Divorce and Death

Mica served Miller with divorce papers on 25 April 2024. She was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina two days later, on 27 April. Her death was ruled a suicide.

Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica's death. The documentary examines the events leading up to her death and the allegations surrounding her marriage.

Netflix Documentary and Miller's Federal Case

Death of the Pastor's Wife premiered on Netflix on 26 August 2026. The three-part documentary examines Mica's marriage, allegations concerning the relationship and the circumstances surrounding her death.

In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted Miller on charges including cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. Miller pleaded not guilty.

His federal trial has been pushed to the October 2026 term following a court-ordered continuance in August. Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica's death.
