Ohio Shooting Ends Mother of Three's Life — Victim's Mother Says 'We Were Betrayed'
Police say the suspect fled on foot before being arrested nearby

A fatal shooting inside a children's bedroom in rural Ohio has left three young children without their mother and ignited anger over a plea deal that spared her partner a life sentence.
The 34-year-old woman, Brianne Otley, was shot dead with her own gun during a domestic dispute, police said, and relatives told the court they felt 'betrayed' by prosecutors after the case was resolved with a manslaughter conviction rather than murder.
What Happened on Martin Street
Police and paramedics were called to a home in the 700 block of Martin Street in Greenville at about 8:30 p.m. on 26 September 2024, following reports that a woman had been shot. Officers found the victim inside the property with at least one gunshot wound in her children's bedroom.
Emergency crews attempted life saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at 9:17 p.m., according to a statement from Greenville Police.
Investigators said the suspect, Zachery Gilbert, fled the scene on foot before officers arrived. A perimeter was set with the assistance of the Darke County Sheriff's Office and Ohio Highway Patrol, and the man was located and taken into custody a short time later.
Arrest, Charges and Plea Deal

Court records show the defendant initially faced charges of murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the Ohio shooting. Prosecutors later reached a plea agreement, under which he admitted one count of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification. The change in charges removed the possibility of a life sentence.
At sentencing this week, a Darke County Common Pleas judge imposed a prison term of between 14 and 19 and a half years in a state correctional facility. Prosecutors had asked for the maximum available sentence under the plea, which the court granted.
'The defendant's conduct in this case is completely in character,' prosecutors wrote. 'He drinks, abuses drugs and he hurts people. He has been afforded treatment multiple times and does not comply. Only a lengthy incarceration will stop the defendant and protect the public from the defendant's actions.

The impact of the defendant's action, when he killed Brianne, will be felt by her family, including her mother, sister, children, family, and friends for the rest of their lives. The defendant's selfishness in only thinking about himself cost Brianne her life.'
What the Court Heard
A probable cause affidavit cited by Court TV stated that the defendant acknowledged having his finger on the trigger when the gun discharged inside the bedroom. Police said alcohol had been consumed in the hours before the argument that preceded the shooting. Local media reported that the couple had recently separated, with the man staying in the home temporarily while looking for alternative accommodation.

In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors argued that a lengthy prison term was necessary to protect the public, citing the defendant's history of substance misuse and non-compliance with treatment. The court accepted those submissions in imposing the upper end of the available range.
Family Reaction and Impact on Children
Relatives of the victim addressed the court and criticised the plea agreement. Her mother said the family felt 'very betrayed' by the decision to accept a manslaughter plea, arguing that it failed to reflect the gravity of the loss. The victim's sister told the court that her sibling had been shot in her children's bedroom and left bleeding on the floor.
Family members said the killing had devastated the victim's three children, who were not in the room at the time of the shooting but have been left without their mother. Supporters described the case as another reminder of the human cost of domestic violence and gun access in family homes.
