Tributes have been paid to Reeva Steenkamp, the model girlfriend of Paralympic and Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius who was found dead at his home.

Pistorius, 26, has been charged with the murder of the 29-year-old after allegedly shooting her.

Condolences and tributes have been paid to the Cape Town-born model, described as "an absolute angel on earth".

Her publicist, Sarit Tomlinson, told Sky News that Steenkamp's family were "devastated" about their loss.

She said: "She was the sweetest human being and an absolute angel on earth. It's a huge loss. She was a talented and beautiful girl."

Tomlinson added that Steenkamp had been with the runner for few months. They had "an absolutely healthy relationship", she said.

Former Miss South Africa Melinda Bam tweeted: "Heartbroken for Reeva Steenkamp's family & for Oscar Pistorius. This highlights how unsafe most South Africans feel because of crime".

Paralympic cyclist Jody Cundy also wrote on Twitter: "Thoughts out to the families of Reeva Steenkamp and Oscar Pistorius. Sad and tragic news".

After graduating in law, Steenkamp took up modelling. She is known in her home country as an FHM cover girl and for being the face of Avon cosmetics.

Her agency, Ice Model Management, said: "Everyone at Ice Model Management and Ice Genetics is absolutely shocked and devastated by the news.

"Reeva has been with the Ice family for seven years. She was a wonderful, beautiful and caring soul and will be missed immensely.

"It is a very sad day for all those that loved and treasured her. Our hearts are broken."

Fans have paid their respects to Steenkamp on her Facebook page.

Maggie Oster posted: "Our sincere condolences, what a great tragedy. We are praying for strength for the families in this difficult time."

Jo-Anne Danielle Germeshuizen said: "Was so nice to have met you, you were such a kind and lovely person. My thoughts are with your family. Rest in the arms of the angels."

Bagaudin Boris Satuec added: "Reeva, you were an amazing, kind, beautiful and smart woman. I am sure you will remain such soul in Paradise."
