A Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader has become the centre of an online debate after the team's updated dance squad performed a synchronised routine during a recent home exhibition game.

The appearance of a male performer among the Eagles' cheerleading ranks prompted a wave of criticism on social media. Some fans even questioned the decision to include men in NFL cheerleading and others threatening to withdraw their support.

One critic wrote: 'Why hire a guy to dance and move like a girl? So he is supposed to appeal to who? Ridiculous,' while another posted: 'This just makes my stomach turn.'

A third fan added: 'This is maddening. WTF are we doing?'

Another social media user used a derogatory slur while criticising the performer, writing: 'Male cheerleaders smh.. this a fruitcake male cheerleader on top of it 🤦🏻‍♂️. Let's just get this season started!'

The backlash went beyond criticism of the performance, with some supporters claiming they would cancel their season tickets.

'Definitely canceling my season tickets. Pass it along maybe we get this trending or whatever the kids call it.. my seats suck bigly, better seat real estate would be totally based!! Or it doesn't work like that,' one person wrote.

Eagles Have Embraced Male Performers

The Eagles' decision to feature male dancers is part of a wider change in NFL cheerleading, which historically consisted predominantly of women.

Male dancers have increasingly appeared alongside female performers in NFL entertainment programmes, reflecting a broader shift in professional sports towards more varied performance teams.

The Los Angeles Rams made headlines in 2018 when they became the first NFL team to introduce male cheerleaders as part of their modern sideline squad. The move helped challenge the long-established perception that NFL cheerleading was exclusively a women's role.

Philadelphia followed soon afterwards.

In 2019, Kyle Tanguay became the Eagles' first modern male cheerleader, marking a significant change for one of the NFL's most recognisable franchises.

Tanguay's arrival opened the door for more male dancers to join the organisation, with the Eagles gradually expanding the number of men performing alongside their female teammates.

Debate Highlights Changing Face of NFL Entertainment

By the 2026 season, Philadelphia's cheerleading roster had expanded to include four male performers, including veteran James LeGette and rookie Jackson O'Brien.

Their inclusion reflects the Eagles' broader approach to modernising their sideline entertainment while placing greater emphasis on dance ability, athleticism and performance rather than gender.

The reaction to the latest exhibition performance nevertheless demonstrates that the evolution has not been universally welcomed. While some supporters have objected strongly to male cheerleaders, others have defended the performers and argued that professional dance should be open to anyone with the necessary skill.

For the Eagles, the controversy is unlikely to change the direction of their cheerleading programme. Male performers have now been part of the organisation for several seasons, making their presence an established feature rather than a one-off experiment.
