Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to Britain for an extended stay has prompted fresh scrutiny from royal biographers and commentators, who suggest the geographical shift may place new pressures on the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived on 26 August with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. While they are establishing a British base at a private, non-royal residence outside London, reports indicate the couple is retaining their California property in Montecito.

Despite the transatlantic move, neither Harry nor Meghan is expected to resume working royal roles, maintaining the status they established upon stepping down from official duties in 2020. With the young children reportedly set to begin attending a local British school, the family's physical proximity to the rest of the firm is generating extensive public interest.

Princess Diana's biographer, Andrew Morton, told Vanity Fair that the relocation has 'changed the narrative' surrounding the monarchy.

Unenviable Position for the Prince of Wales

According to royal commentators, this physical closeness complicates the already strained relationship between Harry and his older brother. Speaking to Hello! magazine, royal biographer Katie Nicholl expressed the opinion that Harry effectively has William 'over a barrel' regarding potential future reconciliation, suggesting that proximity makes the Prince of Wales's firm stance harder to sustain. Nicholl has also separately commented that the Waleses likely felt 'blindsided' by the development.

Direct communication between the brothers remains fractured. The two are not believed to have spoken directly since the funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. Although both attended Lord Robert Fellowes's funeral earlier in 2024, attendees reported that they did not converse.

Morton noted that the brothers' personal friction predates Meghan's entry into the family, encompassing past disagreements over charitable activities and minor residential disputes. An unnamed source quoted by Vanity Fair described William and Catherine as having been 'derailed', adding that there is 'a sense' William might have to watch over his shoulder and does not know what Harry might do next. Catherine publicly announced in January 2025 that she was in remission following her cancer diagnosis, and Kensington Palace previously confirmed that 13-year-old Prince George will begin attending Eton College this September.
