Overview

It is not often that you see a side led by M S Dhoni struggle in the shorter formats of the game, but this is exactly what is happening to Pune who are stuck in the bottom half of the table.

Injuries have struck key players and Kevin Pietersen and Faf du Plessis have been ruled out of the tournament. As with all new franchises, the players take time to bond. Their bowling has been their weak point, and they have actually lost matches which they could have won if the bowlers had been effective.

The biggest disappointment has been the performances of off-spinner R Ashwin who has taken only two wickets in seven games at an average of 77. The Supergiants desperately need to win here if they are to stay in contention for a spot in the knock-out stages.

The team with arguably the best squad in the competition, Mumbai come into this game on the back of consecutive wins and will look to maintain their momentum when they face Pune. Skipper Rohit Sharma has led the team from the front scoring 298 runs in eight games. He stands second in the list of the highest run-scorers in the tournament.

Mumbai have always been slow starters and it is midway that they usually fire and it is no different this time. Key players such as Ambati Rayadu and Kieron Pollard have found form with the bat, while Mitchell McClenaghen has again showed why he is rated so highly taking 12 wickets to stand as the top wicket-taker so far.

Mumbai might look to give Corey Anderson a game in place of the misfiring Jos Buttler. Barring a last minute injury, they are expected to field the same team that beat Kolkata in their last game.
