A gunman shot at least five people at the U.S. Navy Yard on Monday (September 16), including two law enforcement officers, and the shooter was being sought in a building housing the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, officials said.

A Washington police spokesman said those shot included a District of Columbia police officer, one other law enforcement officer, and three others. The spokesman said emergency personnel were tending to the victims, but did not provide details on their conditions.

The Navy said in a statement the shooting took place at the heavily guarded headquarters, where about 3,000 people work.

Dozens of police and emergency vehicles surrounded the complex in southeast Washington, which is about a mile south of the U.S. Capitol, local media reported.

The Washington Post reported a gunman had barricaded himself into a room at the building.
