Bruce Willis Reportedly Only Able to 'Minimally Communicate' Amid Dementia Struggle As Routine Is Revealed
The actor receives round-the-clock professional care near his family's California home, while Emma Heming Willis and his five children remain closely involved

Bruce Willis, the Hollywood action icon diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, is now able to only minimally communicate three years after his condition was made public.
The 71-year-old has settled into a structured daily routine at a separate home near his family's California residence, where he receives round-the-clock professional care while maintaining regular contact with his wife Emma Heming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore and their five children.
To recall, Willis retired from acting in spring 2022 following an initial diagnosis of aphasia, a language disorder that impairs communication. In February 2023, his family disclosed a more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, a degenerative brain disease that damages the frontal and temporal lobes and has no known cure.
Daily Routine Keeps Bruce Willis Active and Connected
Willis maintains a relatively normal routine despite his declining ability to speak. He exercises, goes for walks and keeps regular hours, while extended family members visit frequently to ensure he remains surrounded by loved ones.
'Bruce continues to only be able to minimally communicate, but he still is able to recognize his kids,' the insider said, adding that he 'reacts well' to both Heming Willis and Moore. 'He knows this more than anything, that he is loved deeply by his family.'
The arrangement follows a difficult decision made in 2025, when Heming Willis moved her husband out of the main family home into a nearby single-storey residence staffed by a professional care team.
She has said the move was driven by concerns for their two younger daughters, Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12, whose social lives had become increasingly restricted as their father's condition progressed.
'They weren't having sleepovers, play dates. We weren't inviting people over, it was a really hard time,' Heming Willis told People Magazine during an appearance on the 'Conversations with Cam' podcast. 'Bruce wouldn't want his two young daughters to be clouded by his disease.'
She described the separation as an 'ambiguous loss,' a term used by psychologists to describe grieving someone who is still alive but no longer the person they once were. Even so, she has said the new setup has allowed both Willis and their children to thrive.
Family Unity and Advocacy Define This Chapter
Willis shares three older daughters with Moore: Rumer, 38, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32. All five children remain actively involved in his care, visiting often and maintaining what insiders call a united front.
Rumer Willis has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of watching her father change. 'I really miss my dad. I miss a different version of who he was. There are some days that are just so hard,' she said in a video shared by health company Function.
Yet she has also noted a newfound tenderness in him, a vulnerability that his macho screen persona may once have kept hidden.
Heming Willis, meanwhile, has transformed her caregiving role into public advocacy. In March 2026, she launched the Emma & Bruce Willis Fund for Dementia Research and Caregiver Support at the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration's Hope Rising Benefit in New York, where she accepted the Susan & Si Newhouse Award of Hope.
During World FTD Awareness Week, she posted on Instagram, 'He is the driving force behind my advocacy. He has opened so many doors for me in this work, and I will continue to walk through them. I will not let his diagnosis be in vain.'
Even as the disease advances, those closest to the couple say Heming Willis remains the emotional anchor.
One source said that family members worry she carries 'the weight of the world on her shoulders,' yet she continues to find ways to make her husband smile. 'She does everything she can to get a grin out of him and put that trademark twinkle back in his eyes.'
Nothing is confirmed beyond what the family and their representatives have shared publicly, so everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
