Sydney Sweeney has sparked controversy after reportedly climbing the Hollywood sign without permission to promote her new lingerie brand, SYRN. The stunt, which went viral on social media, has drawn criticism from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and could result in charges of vandalism and trespassing.

A photo of Sweeney climbing the Hollywood sign became viral on TikTok. And whilst it garnered thousands of views, she could reportedly face bigger consequences in no time. The actress's lingerie is reportedly divided into four categories, and all are priced under $100 (£75).

Will Charges Be Made?

According to reports, the controversial personality could be charged with vandalism and trespassing for what she did. Following the events, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Steve Nissen released a statement criticising Sweeney.

'The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns the intellectual property rights to the image of the Hollywood Sign, so that anyone intending to use and/or access the Hollywood Sign for commercial purposes must obtain a licence or permission from the Hollywood Chamber to do so,' he said.

Nissen stressed that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce did not give Sweeney and her brand any licence or permission to use the sign to promote her business.

Not the First Controversy

This is not the first time Sweeney has faced backlash over promotional activities. Last year, she drew criticism following the release of her ad for American Eagle jeans. At the time, the company decided to have a play with words by spelling jeans as genes. However, this did not sit well with critics who claimed that this move was racially charged.

Sweeney was forced to release a statement months later, where she said that she was surprised by the public's reaction to the ad. She explained that she teamed up with American Eagle because she loves the brand, and not for anything else.

Fans Divided

Several Sweeney fans took to social media to support what their idol did. They are convinced that there's nothing wrong with using the Hollywood sign for promotional purposes since no damage has been done.

'Sometimes i think about how it's unfair to judge Sydney Sweeney on the rumour/assumption she's a raging republican but then i remember that if it was me getting those accusations i would NOT be able to sleep a single night without denying it publicly,' one fan wrote. 'Nobody cares. Post more Sydney Sweeney videos,' another fan wrote.

'Classic engagement farming—riding Sydney Sweeney's fame, collecting hate clicks. Haters predicted The Housemaid would flop and celebrated with viral posts after opening weekend—yet a month later, it's already grossed ~$300M. Negativity as a business model, apparently,' one person wrote.

Some people were also critical of the stunt that Sweeney pulled. 'Do women even care enough about Sydney Sweeney to wanna buy her lingerie line though?' one person wrote. 'Classic Sydney Sweeney move—she'll literally throw her bra (and any dignity) at anything for a scrap of publicity. Talentless hack doing what talentless hacks do best: desperate stunts instead of actual acting,' another person wrote.
