What is SynthID? - The Invisible Watermark That Can Get AI Content Detected
Why SynthID could change how we trust AI content online in 2025 and beyond

If you see an image or video online going viral with millions of views, but you could not believe it's real, and then it turns out to be AI made? That is frustrating. In a time where artificial intelligence is creating images, videos, audio and written content at an insane pace, it is becoming super hard to distinguish between human made and machine generated materials. Generative AI tools can now produce lifelike videos, realistic images and text that looks like it is actually true.
So, while this innovation has introduced a whole lot of opportunities for creativity and productivity in one place, it has also led to misinformation, deepfakes and content that seriously lacks authenticity. So, to address this problem, Google DeepMind has developed SynthID, a watermarking technology made to invisibly stamp AI generated content so that it can later be detected and verified. SynthID is here to help common people, journalists and even social media platforms point out whether a piece of digital media was created or altered using AI tools, thereby bringing in greater transparency.

What SynthID Is and How It Works
SynthID is basically a digital watermarking system developed by Google DeepMind and integrated into many generative AI tools. But, unlike visible watermarks placed on images or videos to brand content like those Gemini puts or Grok or Meta AI adds to the corners of images, SynthID embeds imperceptible markers directly into the structure of AI generated content. These things are invisible to the human eye and do not affect quality at all, but can be detected by specialised tools designed to scan for them, in fact, you can use Gemini itself. Just go to Gemini, upload the image and ask Gemini something like 'Is this image AI made?' Big chances are that if it is, Gemini will catch it.
The main purpose of SynthID is a technical response to a massive problem on the internet which is that it is often impossible to know whether a piece of media has been created or fully altered by AI. Traditional watermarks are either visible and easily removed, or absent altogether. SynthID's method though, embeds the watermark during the generation time itself, meaning that the watermark is part of the content's digital creation and remains in it even after typical file modifications like cropping, compression or filtering.
Moreover, SynthID works on multiple types of media. Especially for images and video, the watermark is distributed across the pixels so that it does not degrade image quality but remains detectable by analytical tools like Gemini. As for text, SynthID uses subtle statistical signs during the generation process, adjusting word and token probabilities in a way that can later be recognised by detection systems, although text can easily be altered. Also, audio content generated through AI models also receives inaudible watermarking that survives common transformations like format changes, noise addition, and compression, of course, none of it is 100% certain.
Furthermore, the technology has already been applied in a gigantic way. Since its rollout, Google reports that billions of pieces, around 10 billion to be exact, of content have been watermarked with SynthID throughout its platforms. This includes images generated by Google's models, like Gemini and hosted through services such as the Vertex AI suite. On top of watermarking, Google launched a specific SynthID Detector portal that allows users to upload media and check if it contains a SynthID watermark. This detector can even point out which parts of the content are likely watermarked, showing exactly where AI involvement occurred.
Why SynthID is Important in the Time of AI
There is an obvious need for this because synthetic content leads to both practical and ethical questions. On the one hand, generative AI is a powerful creative tool that enhances productivity in many industries, and that is great. But, on the other hand, the ease with which realistic deepfakes, edited media and fabricated news can be produced presents real risks, as we have seen with many real examples that incite hate. So, without effective ways to authenticate content, audiences can be misled by false visuals and misleading stories. Traditional digital literacy and scepticism are no longer working.
SynthID responds to these problems by offering a scalable, automated way to tag synthetic content at the point of creation. Because the watermark is embedded during generation, it cannot be easily added later or removed without compromising content integrity.
Importantly, SynthID is not a standalone solution to all problems of AI authenticity. This is because it depends on creators using AI tools that support the watermarking system in the first place. Content generated by systems that do not embed SynthID cannot be verified using this method. This means content created with third party AI tools and platforms will not carry a SynthID watermark unless they choose to adopt the technology.
