William 'Bill' Stevenson, the ex-husband of former US First Lady Jill Biden, was arrested by authorities on Monday at his home in Delaware. Stevenson is being charged with the murder of his current wife, Linda Stevenson.
New Castle Police announced that Stevenson was arrested in December. Authorities said that Stevenson is accused of allegedly murdering his current wife, Linda, in their house in Elsmere on 28 December 2025. Who Was Linda Stevenson?
In her obituary, the 64-year-old was described as a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. She also ran a bookkeeping business and was 'deeply family-oriented'. Stevenson was not included in her obituary, nor was it mentioned that she was married, and that she 'passed away unexpectedly'.
'Linda will be remembered as tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal', the obituary said. 'Her strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family and friends will never be forgotten, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her'. Linda is survived by the daughter she shares with Stevenson, Christina Vettori, as well as her granddaughter, Clara, and her sister.
The cause of Linda's death has yet to be released, but authorities said they would conduct an autopsy. However, Vettori told the Daily Mail that the authorities were treating her mother's death as a homicide. Stevenson is detained at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, Delaware, after his arraignment. The police said Stevenson has yet to post his $500,000 (£365,000) bail. His arrest follows a weeks-long investigation, where he was first brought to New Castle County Police Headquarters. He faces one felony count of murder in the first degree.
Bill Stevenson's Previous Marriage
Stevenson was married to former First Lady Jill Biden (then Jacobs) for five years until they split in 1977. Jill was 18 years old and Stevenson was 23 when they got married, and Stevenson opened a music bar called The Stone Balloon near the University of Delaware. The Stone Balloon had its share of performances from artists the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and the Allman Brothers band.
During their divorce, Jill unsuccessfully attempted to keep her share of the bar, which eventually closed in 2024. Two years after their divorce, she went on to marry then-Delaware Senator Joe Biden. Previously, Stevenson said that he suspected Jill and the then-senator were having an affair in August 1974, the year before they would divorce.
'I know exactly when it was. Bruce Springsteen was going to play at The Stone Balloon and I had to go to Northern New Jersey to pay him advance', said Stevenson. 'I asked Jill to go with me and she said no – she had things to do, she had to look after Joe's kids, Beau and Hunter. It was kind of a big deal to go meet Springsteen, I had no idea that she and Joe were that kind of friendly'. 'Then one of her best friends told me she thought Joe and Jill were getting a little too close. I was surprised that she came to me', Stevenson claimed at the time.
