'An Absurd Idea': Scientists Want to Create an Artificial Eclipse in Space to Hunt for Alien Worlds
A vast flower-shaped shield, a billion‑dollar gamble and the stubborn human urge to see whether anyone else is out there

A NASA team is pushing an audacious plan to hunt for alien worlds by creating an artificial eclipse in space, placing a vast 'starshade' some 175,000 kilometres above Earth so ground-based telescopes can finally see planets hidden in the glare of distant stars.
Astronomers have already confirmed thousands of exoplanets, but most were spotted indirectly, by watching stars wobble or dim as planets pass in front of them. Directly imaging an Earth-like planet is far harder.
These worlds are up to a billion times fainter than the stars they orbit, so the light astronomers care about is drowned out by the cosmic equivalent of full‑beam headlights.
The Hybrid Observatory for Earth-like Exoplanets, or HOEE, is NASA's latest attempt to fix that. The concept, described by a small NASA-led team, involves flying a giant flower-shaped screen between Earth and distant stars.
The structure, about 100 metres across, would align precisely with powerful telescopes on the ground, blocking out the starlight and revealing whatever alien planets are lurking nearby.
It is, on the face of it, deeply weird. A kind of precision space parasol. But behind the slightly mad imagery sits a serious scientific ambition that has been building for decades.
How an Artificial Eclipse Could Reveal Alien Worlds
After researchers outlined the HOEE idea as a way to supercharge existing observatories rather than building yet another multi-billion dollar space telescope from scratch. Instead of putting both mirror and shade in orbit, the hybrid model keeps the main telescope on Earth and only launches the starshade.
The principle is surprisingly simple. If you can block the light from a star before it reaches a telescope, the surrounding region becomes dark enough to expose any faint specks of light that might be orbiting it. Those specks are the potential alien planets, including, if the scientists get very lucky, a rocky world roughly the size of Earth in the so‑called habitable zone.
In this vision, the starshade would be carefully unfurled in space, its petal-like edges sculpted to minimise diffracted light. It would then sit tens of thousands of kilometres away, directly in the telescope's line of sight to a target star. Get the geometry right, and you essentially manufacture a perfect, repeatable eclipse.
The alignment demands are brutal. The shade would have to hold its position relative to the telescope and the star with fine precision over enormous distances. Even minor errors could let enough stray light through to wipe out any signal from an alien planet. That is before you factor in launches, deployments and the joys of maintaining a massive structure in orbit.
NASA's Billion-Dollar Bet on Alien Atmospheres
NASA is nowhere near green‑lighting the mission. The HOEE team is currently seeking another round of agency funding to refine the idea. Early estimates suggest the eventual starshade project could carry a price tag in the region of one billion dollars.
In space terms, that sits in the uncomfortable middle. Not cheap, clearly, but still far below the budgets of flagship missions such as the James Webb Space Telescope. The argument from advocates is blunt. If a billion buys a better shot at spotting a truly Earth-like alien world, one with the right atmosphere and temperature, then maybe it is worth it.
The scientific payoff would come from the light that reaches Earth after the artificial eclipse. By breaking that light into its component wavelengths, astronomers can look for fingerprints of gases associated with conditions that might support life. The HOEE plan focuses on detecting atmospheric chemicals such as oxygen and nitrogen, key ingredients in our own planet's habitability story.
Nobody is promising evidence of life. That kind of bold claim would demand multiple lines of proof. But identifying a world with an atmosphere that looks suspiciously familiar to ours would be a serious moment for science, and for our long-running obsession with alien possibilities.
Officials at NASA have framed the starshade concept as one tool among many in the broader search for habitable planets. The idea is not to replace existing missions, but to give them a sharper pair of eyes.
Ground-based telescopes are only getting more powerful, and coupling them with a space-borne eclipse generator could extend their reach well beyond what they were originally built for.

Still, the scepticism writes itself. A giant flower-shaped umbrella floating above Earth, perfectly aligned with telescopes and distant stars, sounds less like engineering and more like science fiction.
Even some scientists have described the plan as 'absurd' in its ambition. Then again, most big shifts in astronomy, from space telescopes to gravitational wave detectors, looked slightly unhinged on paper at first.
If HOEE moves ahead, it will face all the usual battles that define modern space science, from budget fights and technical delays to competition with other marquee missions. The team backing the starshade knows that. Their pitch rests on a simple question that cuts through the noise.
If we had a realistic chance to look directly at a nearby Earth-like alien planet, one that might, in some far‑off future, even be within reach of a human visit, would we really decide that is too much trouble?
