Inde Navarrette's New Apple Thriller Features Killer Crocodiles, Aliens and a Nuclear Explosion, Script Reveals

Apple Original Films has snapped up 'The Waffle House Index', a high-concept thriller scripted by Andrew Nunnelly that hurtles from a late-night diner standoff into killer crocodiles, aliens and a nuclear explosion, with Inde Navarrette set to star and executive produce.

The package, acquired in Los Angeles on Thursday, was secured by Apple after the screenplay's 2025 Black List recognition sparked a bidding battle. Navarrette is attached to lead the cast and executive produce alongside Apple Studios and Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment.

Unconventional Narrative Mechanics in New Apple Thriller

The project arrived on the market following its 2025 Black List recognition, which drew industry attention for its abrupt escalation from a contained diner confrontation into an onslaught of killer crocodiles, aliens and a nuclear explosion. The streamer acquired the package following its appearance on the 2025 Black List.

The narrative takes its title from the informal metric used by the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency, known as FEMA, to evaluate storm severity. If the restaurant chain remains open, conditions are deemed manageable, whereas a complete closure signals catastrophic conditions.

In Nunnelly's script, the premise follows an employee named Jane working the graveyard shift in a severe storm when an armed stranger enters the diner.

Events escalate to incorporate various high-concept genre elements. What begins as a local emergency soon expands into a wider environmental crisis when flash flooding sweeps aggressive crocodiles through the dining area.

The script then introduces an unannounced nuclear blast, a hidden bunker situated directly beneath the foundations and an arrival of extraterrestrial entities into the survival scenario. Studio insiders said the deal commanded a seven-figure sum, surpassing £800,000 ($1 million) after competitive interest from multiple production houses.

Scottish filmmaker Louis Paxton will direct the feature, coming off his NEXT Innovator Award win at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival for his debut picture 'The Incomer'.

Paxton has previously directed episodes of BBC television programmes including 'Shetland' and the comedy thriller 'Wreck'. Nunnelly is also currently co-writing 'Anomaly' for Searchlight Pictures with Rhys Thomas and developing 'The Sleep Train'.

Why Studio Bosses Bet on Inde Navarrette

The acquisition marks a significant move for Navarrette, who steps into executive producing alongside her starring role. Industry interest in the actress increased after Focus Features released the independent horror title 'Obsession' in May 2026.

The film received critical acclaim and grossed over £310 million ($405 million) worldwide, though some distribution estimates placed final box office earnings closer to £388 million ($505 million).

Navarrette's portrayal of Nikki Freeman in the horror project quickly raised her profile across major studios. Marvel subsequently cast her as Rogue in its forthcoming 'X-Men' production, confirming her status among the industry's most in-demand performers.

Before her recent mainstream breakthroughs, she portrayed Estela De La Cruz in the fourth season of Netflix's '13 Reasons Why' and Sarah Cushing in The CW series 'Superman & Lois', which drew 3.25 million viewers on its network premiere.

Her career foundation was largely built through independent cinema. Navarrette made her Sundance debut in 2020 opposite Sienna Miller and Diego Luna in 'Wander Darkly', later attending the Sundance Directors Lab under the guidance of Robert Redford and Ed Harris. She also appeared in the action production 'Trap House'.

Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will oversee the project for Plan B Entertainment, building on an existing production alliance with Apple that includes the Formula One drama 'F1'. Plan B also recently delivered 'Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma' and is preparing the Sarah Polley drama 'The Bell Jar'.
