Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb says advanced extraterrestrial civilizations, if they exist, might have little reason to care about humanity's political divisions or territorial disputes, a sobering perspective on UFOs and the Fermi Paradox as the Trump administration pushes for greater UAP disclosure.

The Fermi Paradox asks why, in a universe so vast and old, we have not detected clear signs of other intelligent civilizations.

Loeb, who leads a UAP Science Advisory Council formed to provide scientific advice to the US government's UAP effort, argues that humanity remains at an early stage of scientific and technological development and may not yet know how to interpret the apparent silence.

Why UFOs and the Fermi Paradox Point to Cosmic Indifference

In an interview published in August 2026, Loeb offered a blunt thought experiment about how an advanced interstellar visitor might view Earth. 'If someone arrives from the vast expanses of interstellar space, recognising how humans divided up territory on Earth is a very low priority for them,' he said.

The Fermi Paradox is partly a question of scale, distance and time. Loeb has described Earth as 'a tiny rock' and about three millionths of the mass of the Sun, a planet formed from material surrounding the young Sun.

That perspective undercuts the notion that extraterrestrial contact, if it ever occurs, would revolve around human leaders, borders or ideologies. But Loeb's comments are hypothetical. There is no established evidence that UAP are alien spacecraft, and his remarks about indifferent extraterrestrial visitors should not be interpreted as a claim that confirmed alien visitors are already here.

If advanced civilizations exist, several possibilities could explain why we have not detected them. They might observe Earth without communicating with us, use technologies beyond our ability to recognize, or simply be so distant that contact is impractical.

UFOs and the Fermi Paradox Through Loeb's Scientific Lens

In recent remarks, he has pointed to the relatively short period during which humans have possessed modern science and advanced technology compared with the potentially much longer technological histories of other civilizations.

In a June 2026 appearance on Jesse Weber Live, Loeb similarly argued that humanity remains ignorant about much of the universe and about technologies that could exist beyond our current capabilities. He used the limitations of human technological experience to illustrate how difficult it may be for us to recognise technology far beyond our current capabilities.

The Fermi Paradox itself does not establish that extraterrestrial civilizations exist. Rather, it highlights a tension between assumptions that intelligent life could be common and the lack of confirmed evidence that we have observed such civilizations.

Several possible explanations have been proposed. One is the so-called zoo hypothesis, which suggests that advanced civilizations could observe less-developed worlds while deliberately avoiding contact.

Another speculative possibility, also discussed by Loeb, is that advanced civilizations could communicate through channels that humanity is poorly equipped to detect, potentially including technologies involving gravitational waves. There is currently no evidence that extraterrestrial civilizations use such a method.

Other explanations are more straightforward: intelligent life could be extremely rare, civilizations could destroy themselves before becoming long-lived, or technological civilizations could exist but be too distant, too faint or otherwise too difficult for current instruments to detect.

Loeb's Approach to UAP

Loeb's approach emphasizes collecting physical evidence rather than relying solely on eyewitness accounts or videos.

He has said he is approaching his government advisory work with the assumption that UAP are human-made unless evidence demonstrates otherwise.

The Galileo Project, which Loeb leads at Harvard, similarly aims to conduct systematic scientific searches for potential extraterrestrial technological signatures. Its research includes the study of unusual objects in Earth's vicinity as well as interstellar objects, using instruments and data analysis rather than relying solely on anecdotal reports.

Loeb has also argued that the solar system may contain smaller interstellar objects that current telescopes are unable to detect because they are too faint. That possibility, he says, is one reason systematic searches using more capable instruments could be valuable.

The broader point is one of uncertainty: humanity has searched only a small fraction of the possible places and technological signatures through which extraterrestrial intelligence could potentially reveal itself.

What the U.S. UAP Effort Has and Has Not Found

The UAP Governance Board, an interagency body established by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, coordinates the broader government UAP effort, while Loeb's advisory council provides scientific expertise.

But government interest in UAP should not be confused with government confirmation of extraterrestrial technology.

No publicly released US government UAP investigation has established that an observed object is extraterrestrial technology. NASA has said it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) has likewise reported that no U.S. government investigation has confirmed a UAP as extraterrestrial technology.

That leaves a significant gap between two very different propositions: that some UAP remain unexplained, and that those objects are alien spacecraft. The existence of unresolved UAP cases does not by itself constitute evidence of extraterrestrial technology.

Scientists Remain Divided Over How to Interpret UAP

Some scientists have criticized his appointment and his previous claims about possible extraterrestrial technology, arguing that his interpretations can go beyond what the available evidence supports. Among those who have publicly criticised aspects of Loeb's approach are astrophysicist Steve Desch and former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick.

Loeb has defended his approach as evidence-driven and has argued that potentially extraordinary explanations should be investigated rather than dismissed without examination.

The disagreement illustrates the broader scientific challenge surrounding UAP: ambiguous observations can be worth investigating without being evidence of extraterrestrial origins.

For now, the Fermi Paradox remains exactly that, a paradox rather than a discovery. Humanity does not know whether extraterrestrial civilizations exist, whether they are nearby, or whether we have already encountered phenomena that we do not yet understand.

Loeb's argument is ultimately a reminder of how limited our perspective may be. If technologically advanced civilizations exist, their priorities, capabilities and methods of communication could be radically different from our own. But that remains a possibility, not a confirmed explanation for the UFO mystery.
