Brad Pitt Once Said He Had To 'Pretend the Marriage Was Something That It Wasn't' With Jennifer Aniston
Brad Pitt discusses his past marriages to Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, and his evolving relationship with Ines de Ramon

Brad Pitt has opened up about his previous marriages amid his romance with jewelry executive Ines de Ramon. The actor had been married and divorced to Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie prior to his relationship with de Ramon.
Over the years, Pitt has expressed his feelings about love and the nature of his various relationships. While the actor has dated several of his co-stars and other celebrities, he is of the opinion that 'love changes shape'.
Pitt Denies Marriage to Jennifer Aniston Was a Failure
Pitt's perspective on his marriage to Jennifer Aniston was gracious even when it ended. The actors married in July 2000 until Aniston filed for divorce in 2005 months after the announcement that they were separating.
Despite the separation, Pitt pushed back against the idea that the marriage was unsuccessful in a 2005 interview with GQ. He did not understand looking at the relationship as a failure because it had not been flawless. He said he embraced 'the messiness of life'.
Pitt noted that he and Aniston had remained loving until the end of their relationship and that he was glad with how they handled it. Pitt made it clear that he still believed in marriage after their separation.
The 'Fight Club' Star made a controversial comment about his marriage with Aniston several years later. In a 2011 interview with Parade, Pitt spoke about a period in his life when he felt 'unsatisfied'.
He said that he had spent years hiding from being a celebrity and searching for interesting stories via his movies while not actually living an interesting life himself. He then linked those feelings to his marriage with Aniston, describing himself as 'trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't'.
Pitt quickly issued a clarification due to the charged remark, saying that he did not mean to call Aniston boring. 'I was becoming dull to myself', he explained, and that he alone was responsible for that feeling. Pitt called Aniston 'loving and funny', saying that she will always remain a good friend to him.
Angelina Jolie's Marriage to Pitt Changed How He Viewed Love
Pitt married Angelina Jolie in 2014, meeting on the set of 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith'. Pitt said, 'I haven't known life to be any happier', saying he had always imagined plenty of activity in his home. They became parents to six children– three biological, three adopted.
Unfortunately, the marriage only lasted two years until Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences. Three years worth of legal proceedings led to their divorce becoming legal in 2019. Pitt sued Jolie for selling her share of a winery to a third party, and she countersued, alleging that he physically abused her and her children on a plane in 2016.
Jolie and her children then chose to remove Pitt's surname from their legal names, although these changes have not been made legal yet.
In an interview with GQ following his separation from Jolie, Pitt said he now understood 'letting someone go if you love them'.
'There's no love without loss,' he said. 'It's a package deal.'
Pitt Says His Relationship With Inez de Ramon 'Evolved'
Pitt recently found love again with Inez de Ramon after meeting her in 2022. Their relationship gradually became public after appearing together in the British Grand Prix in 2024.
In an interview with GQ, Pitt was asked whether making his relationship with de Ramon public at a Formula One event had been a calculated decision to tie to his 'F1' movie.
He laughed off the idea. 'No, life just evolves. Relationships evolve.'
Pitt also discussed the end of the lengthy divorce proceedings with Angelina Jolie. When asked whether he was relieved that it came to an end, he downplayed it and described it as something reaching its legal conclusion.
Calling to mind his comments about love two decades prior, it seems that Pitt accepts that 'love changes shape' as he continues his relationship with de Ramon. The pair made several public appearances in 2026, including the French Open in Paris in June.
Pitt indicates that he is less interested in defining his relationships and personal life than the public is as he moves forward with his acting career and relationship with de Ramon.
