Sports Trainer at California Private School Arrested for Filming Alleged Sexual Assault of Teenage Student
The accused was treating a student's injury when the alleged assault happened

A 31-year-old sports trainer at an elite private high school in San Jose, California, has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student and recording the incident on his phone, police said.
Kelvin Chiu, who worked on the athletic training staff at Archbishop Mitty High School, faces allegations including sexual battery, annoying or molesting a minor, and the production and possession of child sexual abuse material.
According to investigators, the teenager reported that Chiu was treating her for a sports injury when the alleged assault occurred. She also claimed he recorded the incident using his mobile phone.
San Jose police responded to the school's campus, located in the 5000 block of Mitty Way, at approximately 7:30 pm on 8 October.
The investigation subsequently expanded after detectives searched Chiu's phone and allegedly discovered child sexual abuse material. Authorities are examining whether other students may have been affected, although investigators have not identified additional victims.
The case has raised concerns about safeguarding in school sports programmes, where trainers may have direct physical contact with young athletes while providing injury treatment and rehabilitation.
Police Search Trainer's Home and Vehicles
Detectives from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force obtained search warrants for Chiu, his home and his vehicles as part of the investigation. On 9 October, investigators located him at his residence in Fremont, California, and searched the property, police said.
Chiu was subsequently arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail. The allegations against him include offences relating to the alleged sexual abuse of a minor and child sexual abuse material.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the evidence recovered during the searches or whether additional charges could follow. Chiu's position of trust has prompted detectives to investigate whether other young people could have been victimised. Police have not confirmed any further alleged victims.
Chiu's employment at Archbishop Mitty was confirmed by the Catholic Diocese of San Jose through spokesperson Cynthia Shaw. The school, a private Catholic institution known for its academic and athletic programmes, charges approximately $34,000 (£25,500) in annual tuition.
Shaw said the student's family contacted school officials on the evening of the alleged incident. Chiu has since been placed on administrative leave, while the school is cooperating with law enforcement.
School Offers Counselling as Investigation Continues
The allegations have prompted the school to address the potential impact on students and their families while investigators continue their work. Shaw said counselling services would be available to students who needed support following the incident.
'Our first concern is for the student and family, and for all of our students and families. We recognise the impact a situation of this nature may have on our students, and the school's Counseling teams will be available to speak with students who may need additional support,' Shaw said.
The investigation remains ongoing and the allegations against Chiu have not been proven in court. Police have not released further details about his legal representation or any subsequent court proceedings.
The case echoes wider concerns about abuse allegations involving adults in positions of trust around young athletes. Similar cases involving school employees or sports staff have previously raised questions about how institutions identify warning signs, supervise staff and respond when allegations emerge.
