Complete winners list for American Music Awards 2016: Drake, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande win big

The American Music Awards 2016 is being held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, to honour the best in music. With 13 nods, Drake dominated the nominations that were announced in October.

Event highlights

The star-studded evening was hosted by Jay Pharoah and Gigi Hadid. Dressed in a Roberto Cavalli sheer white lace gown, accessorised with a silver choker, the American fashion model looked radiant as she kick-started the evening on the red carpet.

She later changed into a fiery red Atelier Versace gown with a thigh-high slit and multiple cuts and made references to the political situation in the US relating to the country's presidential election. "Don't worry guys tonight we do not have to deal with the electoral college, so ... " she started her gig, with Pharoah adding "Tonight, it's all about the music."

Hadid's Melania Trump impression and Pharoah's comic take on politics was the highlight of the evening. "Green day is performing and a white guy is the president, it's the 1990s all over again!" said the stand-up comedian. "I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia," Gigi added while scrunching up her face like the future first lady of the US. Her act attracted mixed reviews from fans.

And the winners are...

Selena Gomez, who made her first public appearance since her legit trip to rehab, won the favourite female artist – pop/rock award. Ariana Grande wowed fans with her emotional speech after winning the artist of the year award. She said she was "trying not to cry" while accepting her award.
