Emma Winnall, 94, was seriously injured in the attack at her home in Birmingham (West Midlands Police)

The daughter of the 93-year-old Birmingham woman who was assaulted in her bed has urged people to come forward to help bring her attackers to justice.

Emma Winnall suffered a fractured skull, broken arm and wrist and a partially severed finger when she was attacked at her home.

Winnall's daughter, Joyce Belcoe, described the horror she felt at discovering her mother's badly beaten body during a press conference

Belcoe, 56, said: "To see your mum viciously beaten and covered in blood is the most horrific nightmare.

"It's broken my heart to hear my frail and defenceless mum manage to say that she was screaming for help and no-one came.

"So someone out there knows who did this. So please come forward before they do it to someone else."

The attack took place between 9pm on 30 April and 9am on 1 May, when she was found by her carer.

DCI Sab Johal said: "We have made progress: two names put to us by members of the public are of particular interest and will form a central part of our inquiry.

"This was a shocking attack on a defenceless, elderly woman as she slept in her own bed. No-one capable of carrying out such a despicable attack deserves protecting - I'm asking people to look into their consciences and if they have any suspicions about who may be responsible to contact police."

Police have said there was no sign of a break-in at the grandmother-of-seven's home and no possessions were believed to have been taken.

A motive remains unclear.

Winnall remains in a stable but critical condition in hospital.
