A 25-year-old migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh has died after falling into a vat of boiling jaggery at a processing plant in Maharashtra. The worker, identified as Danish, suffered catastrophic burns when he plunged into the scalding liquid on 21 August and later died in hospital despite efforts to save him.

Closed-circuit television footage, which emerged late on Sunday evening, has laid bare the final moments of the young father, who had travelled across India to earn money and clear a family debt. The video shows his colleagues racing to pull him from the vat as he cries out for help.

Economic Migration and Danish's Background

Danish had relocated from his home in Uttar Pradesh to the western state of Maharashtra four months before the incident. He travelled alongside 15 other men.

This move reflects a common economic migration route for rural Indian workers, who often head to more industrialised states seeking reliable wages and better employment prospects.

The primary motivation for his relocation was to settle a financial burden of ₹70,000 (approximately £648). This debt was originally owed by his elder brother, and Danish had taken on the responsibility of repaying it.

The worker leaves behind a large family in his native village, including his parents, an elder brother, a sister, his wife of two years and an infant son who is just two months old.

What the CCTV Shows Inside the Jaggery Plant

The fatal incident occurred during the afternoon shift when plant employees were working around two large cauldrons used to boil sugarcane juice.

At approximately 2.25 pm, Danish was standing at the edge of an active boiling vat. According to eyewitness accounts and the video evidence, he appeared to suffer a sudden bout of dizziness.

This caused him to lose his balance and fall straight into the boiling liquid.

After his fall, the trapped worker repeatedly called out to his colleagues for help. Fellow labourers ran towards the cauldron, although they were initially held back by the extreme heat.

Two workers grabbed large industrial ladles in an attempt to hook him and pull him out of the vat. When the ladles proved ineffective, several colleagues stepped very close to the boiling mixture and managed to drag him out by hand. They lifted him from the vat and laid him on the factory floor.

Witnesses reported that the intense heat had caused his skin to peel, prompting urgent requests for cold water. Danish was taken to a local medical facility, but the severe burn injuries he sustained proved fatal.

Police, Video Evidence and Family Reaction in Mudi Village

Following a post-mortem examination conducted by Maharashtra authorities, the body of the worker was transported back to his native Mudi village in the Isanagar area of Lakhimpur. He arrived on Saturday, and the return of his body sparked unrest among his grieving relatives.

Family members initially accused the labourers who had accompanied Danish to Maharashtra of negligence, leading to a tense atmosphere in the village. To manage the situation and maintain public order, Isanagar police officers were sent to the village.

To address rumours of foul play and the family's accusations, authorities showed relatives the CCTV footage recovered from the Maharashtra processing plant. Watching the recording of the apparent dizziness and fall helped to reassure the family and brought an end to the protests.

Circle Officer Shamsher Bahadur Singh said that the local police response was preventative and aimed at ensuring peace during the mourning period. He said a law enforcement team was sent as a precaution when the body reached the village, and that no written complaint has been received against anyone in relation to the matter so far.
