  • Jones believes he and McGregor would be in the same boat in terms of achieving an upset.
  • Many are predicting Jones vs Lesnar to be the UFC's biggest money fight.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones believes a potential fight with Brock Lesnar is "somewhat equivalent" to the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor contest on 26 August.

A super fight between Jones and Lesnar has been all the talk in the combat world ever since the 30-year-old defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on 29 July.

With both fighters expressing an interest in facing each other, the first hurdle has been cleared for a contest that many are predicting will be the UFC's biggest ever fight.

However, while a potential bout between the pair will not make as much money as Mayweather vs McGregor, Jones has compared his task at hand to McGregor's when it comes to upsetting the odds.

"It's a big money fight," Jones said, as quoted on Bloody Elbow. "I think I was inspired by Conor McGregor, to be honest with you. To just dare and to reach, reach higher."

"Me versus Brock Lesnar is somewhat equivalent to Mayweather and McGregor. A lot of people would assume that I would lose that fight. Brock Lesnar is super athletic. He was a Division I national wrestling champion. Yeah, he's older but he's just a freak. He's a rare talent. I don't know what the betting odds would be on that one.

"It's just like, do the impossible. Be the David and Goliath story just the same way McGregor dares to compete against Floyd Mayweather. You know what, if you come up short, at least you have more balls than the average American to even step in there. But if you win, the glory that comes with beating a Floyd Mayweather or beating a Brock Lesnar, it's huge."

While many combat fans would love to see Jones test himself in the heavyweight division against Lesnar, a possible bout between the duo will not happen at least until the summer of 2018.

Regardless, "Bones" is confident that the fight will happen eventually, citing the fact that Lesnar is a great businessman and knows about the financial potential that a possible bout with him could have.

"I don't know what's gonna happen with him, but I know Brock's a great businessman and I know he knows that this would be huge money," Jones added. "I'm 40 pounds lighter than him so I'm sure that just the thought of being the first person to defeat me has to be running through his mind. And the pay day. So I'm sure the fight is gonna happen. It's just gonna be a matter of time."
