Woman Arrested After Crashing Through Security Checkpoint Near Trump's Mar-A-Lago Estate

A Florida woman was arrested after police said she drove through a closed Secret Service security checkpoint near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, setting off a pursuit and standoff in Palm Beach.

The woman was identified as 29-year-old Alexa Rae Scharf of Loxahatchee, Florida. The incident unfolded Tuesday evening, 25 August, and led to a temporary closure of South Ocean Boulevard as officers responded to the scene to arrest her.

Police say the encounter began when Scharf entered a restricted checkpoint area near Mar-a-Lago and spoke with a Secret Service agent before getting back into her SUV and driving away.

Checkpoint Encounter Escalates

The probable cause affidavit stated that Scharf allegedly entered the checkpoint in the Bath & Tennis Club's west parking lot at about 6pm and initially approached Secret Service Agent McGear, who was at the time stationed at a closed checkpoint in the area.

Scharf reportedly left the vehicle and headed towards a nearby hose and sprinkler system, which she switched on. When McGear questioned her identity, Scharf allegedly told him, 'I'm here for the car wash.'

Investigators say she then drove south along South Ocean Boulevard in her Hyundai SUV before entering the grounds of a nearby property through a gate. Officers and Secret Service personnel followed and attempted to get Scharf out of the vehicle, but authorities said she refused, per People.

According to the police account, Scharf later drove toward the officers, forcing them to move out of her path. Authorities said she then manoeuvred between police vehicles and sped away, prompting officers to pursue her. The incident ended at another property, where Scharf stopped and remained inside her SUV despite repeated commands to surrender.

Police Standoff Ends in Arrest

Officers eventually broke a window of the SUV to take Scharf into custody, according to reports citing the police account. A pit bull was also inside the vehicle and, according to Palm Beach police, charged at officers during the arrest and bit one of them.

Speaking to CBS12, police said the dog was shot twice by an officer. A veterinarian, assisted by the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, attempted to revive the dog, but it later died of the gunshot wounds.

The confrontation resulted in South Ocean Boulevard being closed for several hours while police dealt with the standoff. Local authorities said the road was shut between Via Agape and 1236 South Ocean Boulevard from about 6pm until roughly 9:30pm before reopening. Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago during the incident.

Scharf faces two counts of aggravated assault involving a vehicle, along with charges for fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer without violence, according to the Palm Beach Police Department report cited by WPBF. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the charges could change as the investigation continues.

Security remains a major concern around Mar-a-Lago, where Secret Service personnel regularly restrict access to roads and properties near the estate during security operations. The incident is being investigated by local authorities, while Scharf is expected to face the court process over the allegations.
