Arsenal capped a frantic transfer deadline day with the dramatic capture of Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta along with Chelsea's Yossi Benayoun.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger looked to have missed out on Arteta earlier in the day after Everton rejected a bid for the Spaniard.

But the 29-year-old sealed a £10m move to the Emirates after he told Everton that he wanted to leave Goodison Park and was willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.

Arsenal also signed Germany defender Per Mertesacker from Werder Bremen and wing-back Andre Santos from Fenerbache.

Elsewhere, Raul Meireles moved from Liverpool to Chelsea, while Craig Bellamy returned to Anfield on a two-year deal. Kenny Dalglish also offloaded a number of fringe players in a busy deadline day; with Joe Cole moving to Lille on a season-long loan, Christian Poulsen joining French side Evian and David Ngog heading toBolton.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp reinforced his reputation for last-minute deals with the capture of West Ham midfielder Scott Parker but missed out on Bolton defender Gary Cahill. Redknapp allowed Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton to join Aston Villa, while David Bentley signed for West Ham on a season-long loan.

QPR brought in Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips and Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand, but failed to sign Tottenham's Peter Crouch who joined Stoke for £10m.

Meanwhile, Manchester City completed the free transfer of former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves on a one-year deal.
