Baker Mayfield Injury Update: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Scheduled For MRI On Dislocated Thumb

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has confirmed that quarterback Baker Mayfield will undergo an MRI on Monday after suffering a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand during Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The injury comes as the winless Buccaneers enter Week 4 at 0-3, their worst start to a season since 2014.

How the Injury Unfolded

The injury occurred with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter after Mayfield scrambled under pressure on a fourth-and-13 play.

Tampa Bay faced the critical fourth down with 1:54 on the clock and was trailing 20-16 when Mayfield evaded multiple defenders before being hit by Vikings inside linebacker Blake Cashman as he threw.

The pass was intercepted by Andrew Van Ginkel, and Mayfield immediately went down holding his right hand in obvious pain.

MRI Expected To Clarify Extent of Injury

Bowles told reporters after the game that X-rays did not show a fracture and that Mayfield would undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

'He's got a dislocated thumb. He's going to get an MRI [Monday] just to see exactly what inside is wrong with it, so we'll know tomorrow,' Bowles said.

The MRI is expected to provide more information about the injury and help determine a recovery timetable.

Quarterback Situation and Mayfield's Durability

Mayfield has started 54 consecutive games since joining the Buccaneers, a streak tied for the longest active run in the NFL. His potential absence would leave Tampa Bay considering its options at quarterback. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels replaced Mayfield for the final 28 seconds and threw an interception on a Hail Mary on the final play.

The 2026 season marked Mayfield's fourth year with Tampa Bay after he agreed to a three-year, $165 million contract extension just days before the regular season began.

Through three games, he has completed 61 of 96 passes for 615 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while being sacked 13 times.

Bowles entered the season under pressure after questions were raised about his job security during the offseason, with several outlets placing him atop NFL coaching hot-seat rankings following the team's late-season collapse in 2025.

The Buccaneers surrendered an 86-yard punt-return touchdown to fall behind 10-0 early before Minnesota extended its lead with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Kyler Murray to Jordan Addison.

A holding penalty later nullified a touchdown by Chris Godwin Jr, and Tampa Bay committed eight penalties for 81 yards, mostly on offence, while converting only two of 17 third-down attempts.

Vikings' Performance and Fourth-Down Decision

Minnesota's offence also had an uneven afternoon. Murray completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Justin Jefferson left the game with an ankle injury. The Vikings nevertheless held on for a 23-16 victory, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Bowles defended his decision to go for it on fourth down, saying the team needed to make a play with little time remaining. 'It was the end of the game, we needed a play. We weren't, get the ball back with very little time. We had to make a play,' he said.

The extent of Mayfield's injury remains unclear pending the MRI. If the examination reveals a more significant injury, Tampa Bay's plans at quarterback could change for the coming weeks, while the result will also add to the scrutiny surrounding Bowles after the team's 0-3 start.
