Ex-NFL Player Held at Gunpoint During Arrest on Burglary and Assault Charges in Florida

Former NFL player Damoun Patterson has been arrested in Florida on four felony charges following a high-risk traffic stop. The 31-year-old was detained in Daytona Beach after police pulled over a white Kia. The incident was captured on video released by CBS 12.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, Patterson faces charges of armed burglary of a dwelling, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief.

He remained in custody as of Monday afternoon, CBS 12 reported, citing Volusia County jail booking records.

A charging affidavit stated that a 'be-on-the-lookout' notice had been issued for Patterson and the stolen vehicle. The alert was reportedly connected to a home invasion in Orlando.

The traffic stop quickly became tense. An officer approached the Kia with a firearm drawn and ordered the driver to slowly leave the vehicle.

'You be cool with me, we'll be cool with you,' the officer told Patterson.

The officer then placed him in handcuffs. He explained that Patterson was being detained before asking where he was from.

'Orlando,' Patterson replied.

Officers Allegedly Find Knife Inside Stolen Vehicle

The situation escalated after officers pointed out an alleged knife inside Patterson's vehicle. Police told him that the Kia had been reported stolen. They also informed him that he would be taken to jail and could expect to hear from Orlando police.

Patterson did not appear to respond to the information. He was then placed in the back of a police vehicle.

While being detained, however, Patterson reportedly began discussing his football career with the officers. One officer asked him about his connection to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

'You played on the Steelers?' the officer asked.

Patterson explained that the Steelers had hosted him for a workout. He then appeared to discuss his time with the organisation. Patterson reportedly claimed that the team had clocked him at 23 mph.

He also mentioned that he broke 'both toes'. Patterson added that he wanted the Steelers to know that they should have drafted him.

The comments came as officers continued processing the arrest. The allegations against Patterson have not been proven in court.

Patterson Had Brief Spells With Four NFL Teams

Patterson's football career included opportunities with several NFL organisations. He reportedly signed with or spent time around the Patriots, Steelers, Falcons and Buccaneers. However, he never appeared in an official NFL regular-season game.

Patterson began his college career at Utah State. He played one season there before transferring to Highland Community College.

He eventually moved to Youngstown State. Patterson spent his final two college seasons with the Penguins. His performances earned him opportunities to pursue professional football. He caught passes during pre-season games and worked to earn a permanent NFL roster spot.

However, his career remained largely centred around workouts, training camps and practice squads.

For many undrafted players, practice-squad opportunities provide a route into the NFL. Players can develop while remaining available for promotion to the active roster.

Patterson ultimately did not make that jump. His football career has now been overshadowed by the criminal allegations in Florida.

The case remains ongoing. Patterson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
