A Miami-Dade man was arrested last week after investigators linked him to an alleged armed robbery of his neighbour nearly a month earlier, with building records and surveillance helping identify him, according to deputies.

Jacob Johnson, 60, was arrested on 20 August in connection with the alleged 31 July robbery. The victim and Johnson lived in the same apartment building in the Westgate area of Miami-Dade County, where the victim told deputies that a man entered his vehicle, pointed a gun at his head, and demanded his valuables. The victim estimated that about $113,000 worth of jewellery was taken, according to the police report shared by local media.

How Police Linked a Neighbour to the Robbery

According to the police report, the victim was seated in his vehicle when Johnson allegedly entered through the rear passenger door, pulled out a two-tone revolver, pressed it against the victim's head, and demanded his valuables. Johnson then pulled a 10-karat yellow gold Cuban-link chain, bracelets, and a ring, the report said.

The victim told deputies he feared for his life. After the alleged robbery, Johnson fled towards a nearby parking garage, while the victim used his phone to record video of him running away.

The investigation then took an unusual turn because the victim believed the suspect lived in the same building. He had seen the man use a key fob to enter a secured door.

Building Records and Surveillance Identified the Suspect

According to the police report, investigators reviewed resident records and identified Johnson as a person of interest. The deputies said that the apartment management staff had shown images and videos of the suspect, and one employee immediately recognised him and referred to him as 'Mr Jacob'.

Building surveillance provided another link. Footage showed Johnson leaving his third-floor apartment shortly before 7pm, wearing clothing consistent with what was seen in the victim's video and photographs.

Deputies said Johnson was then seen returning to his apartment shortly after the robbery was reported. That detail became central to the investigation. However, surveillance was not the only evidence used to identify the suspect, as the victim was later shown a photographic lineup and identified Johnson as the man who allegedly robbed him.

Suspect Denied Using a Real Firearm

The report revealed that investigators have also found that Johnson had five previous felony convictions. Deputies in charge of the case said those convictions meant he was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition.

A search warrant was executed at Johnson's home at about 6:55am on 20 August, before he was taken into custody. During a post-Miranda interview, Johnson told investigators he was involved in the robbery but said the handgun he used was a 'fictitious replica cap gun'.

Jail records cited by WPLG said Johnson was facing four charges: armed robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon, first-degree grand theft while armed, illegal possession of a weapon as a post-convicted felon, and armed burglary. As of 21 August, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond listed as 'to be set'.

The case remains at the allegation stage. What makes the arrest unusual is not simply the reported value of the jewellery, but how investigators say the search for a suspect led back into the victim's own apartment building and to a neighbour whose movements were captured on the building's surveillance system.

Johnson remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond to be set at a future hearing. The case is set to proceed as the legal process continues.
