Overview

The rivalry between the two great cricketing nations comes from the success both have tasted in all formats of the game. Australia may hold the advantage over India in ODIs, but in the shortest format of the game, the Asian cricketing giants have the advantage. They lead 8-4 in overall T20 meetings between the two countries, with India's latest win coming in a 3-0 whitewash of Australia during their tour Down Under in January.

In ICC World T20 events, however, the teams are level with two wins apiece. Australia are yet to win a T20 World Cup, while India won the inaugural event in 2007 and finished runners-up to Sri Lanka in the 2014 edition in Bangladesh.

The hosts take on the 50-over World Champions in a virtual quarter-final on Sunday, where the winner will progress to the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 as the second-placed team in the group, behind leaders New Zealand, who have conquered all before them thus far. The Kiwis and West Indies are the only two teams to have confirmed their place in the last four with the second place in both groups up for grabs.

India and Australia have been below par in the tournament. Both lost to New Zealand in their opening encounters but beat Bangladesh and Pakistan before the mouth-watering clash at the IS Bindra stadium in Mohali. Both teams face multiple challenges on the field but will hope they can put it all together when it matters most.

The Aussies are coming into the game on the back of a relatively comfortable victory over Pakistan, while India needed a last-over meltdown from Bangladesh to stay in the hunt for a place in the semi-finals. The winner of the clash between the two great rivals is likely to meet West Indies in the last four.
