Overview

Kings XI were handed a lifeline after their defeat to the Knight Riders in Qualifier 1 as they made it to Qualifier 2. In their last fixture, the Punjab side took on two-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings, who made it to the qualifiers after defeating reigning champion Mumbai Indians in eliminator on Wednesday.

In Qualifier 2 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, the Super Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first. Virender Sehwag and Manan Vohra gave a brilliant start to George Bailey's side as the duo went on to put a 110-run partnership in less than 11 overs, before Vohra was dismissed for 34.

It was Sehwag's knock of 122 from 58 balls and David Miller's quick 38 from 19 deliveries that helped Punjab post a total of 226 runs for the loss of six wickets.

In reply, Chennai were given a good start by Suresh Raina as they reached 100 in just six overs. The left-handed batsman was dismissed after his brilliant knock of 87 from 25 balls.

After Raina was run out, Ravindra Jadeja tried to take things forward. However, the all-rounder was unsuccessful as Dhoni's side suffered a collapse in the middle. This saw them fall short by 24 runs, resulting in Kings XI making it to the final.

Meanwhile, the Knight Riders sealed their eighth consecutive win by getting past Punjab in Qualifier 1 on Wednesday. Gautam Gambhir's side made 163 runs from their 20 overs and in reply, Kings XI managed only 135 runs, losing eight wickets in the process.

This is the second IPL final for Kolkata, and for Punjab the first.
