A new "leaked" photo purporting to show workers assembling the iPhone 5's display seeks to prove once and for all that Apple is building the device.

The image was leaked on Wednesday by unofficial Apple web site 9to5Mac. It showed what appears to be an iPhone display assembly production line.

Verifying the original source of the photo is difficult. Before being picked up by 9to5Mac it had appeared on the Chinese microblogging and forum sites Sina Weibo and WeiPhone.com.

While unverified, the image shows an iPhone 4-esque device with a slightly larger, elongated display.

9 to 5 Mac has since used the image as further proof for its previous suggestion that Apple's next iPhone will hit stores in October.

On Wednesday 9 to 5 Mac, citing an unnamed source, reported that Apple plans to release its next smartphone between 7 and 14 Oct., opening to pre-orders on 29 or 30 Sept.

Apple declined to comment on the authenticity of the new image.
