Liverpool are considering a shock move for Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.

Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers recently expressed his frustration at the club failing to replace Andy Carroll, who was allowed to join newly promoted West Ham United on a season-long loan. The former Newcastle United man's departure leaves only new signing Fabio Borini and Uruguayan international Luis Suarez as the available senior strikers at Anfield and the former Swansea City boss was reportedly even considering bringing former Liverpool legend Michael Owen in on a free transfer. However, the former Real Madrid man has now joined Stoke City.

Del Piero is presently a free agent, after being released by the Italian champions last season and was understood to be close to joining Australian club Sydney FC, till Liverpool showed a late interest. Premier League new boys Southampton have also been linked with a move for the 37 year old.

"Del Piero originally ruled out a move to the Premier League as only Southampton were interested and he didn't want to jump from Juventus to the Saints. Then Sydney FC came in and started discussing a deal with him as Del Piero wanted a new challenge outside of top-level football. At the last minute Liverpool came in and said 'don't sign a deal yet as we are interested'. The situation currently is that he will not sign for Sydney FC whilst he is waiting on an offer from Liverpool," talkSport quoted a source close to Del Piero as saying.

Meanwhile, Olympiakos are also interested in the former Italy international and the forward's brother and representative, Stefano Del Piero, has admitted they are in negotiations with the Greek champions.

"At this moment, I can't say anything more than that we are in contact. Be patient. It is a matter of hours before we see if Alessandro will play for Olympiakos or not," the Daily Mail quoted Stefano as saying

Del Piero joined Juventus from Padova in 1993 and played for the Turin giants for 19 seasons, making close to 700 appearances in all competitions and scoring 286 goals. The striker is expected to announce his destination soon.
