Liverpool are paying close attention to Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke as they consider making an offer for the youngster in the January transfer window.

The 21 year old is a current member of the Spain squad and has been making headlines this season with a string on impressive performances that have helped Atletico make the perfect start to the new campaign.

Atletico are used to being in the shadow of their illustrious neighbours Real Madrid but they have already beaten their great rivals and currently sit joint top of the table after winning their first eight league games.

Koke has been instrumental in the club's early season success, scoring two and currently topping the assists table in Spain with six in eight league games.

This form has not gone unnoticed with Talksport reporting that Liverpool have been paying close attention to the central midfielder and are considering making an offer of £17m in January.

Liverpool have plenty of options in the centre of midfield but it seems manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to add yet more depth to his squad in order to maintain the club's push for a return to the Champions League.

The Merseyside club have also enjoyed an excellent start to the season and currently sit in second place, behind Arsenal on goals scored, after collecting 16 points from their opening seven games.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone will be keen to keep hold of one of his most talented players and will hope that he can convince the young midfielder to remain at the club, as he did with in-form striker Diego Costa.

Liverpool made an offer for the powerful striker in the summer but Costa committed himself to Atletico and has since scored 10 league goals in just eight games already this season.

Rodgers will hope that he has more success convincing Koke to leave and will be aware that his chances are significantly improved if Liverpool are still in contention for a first league title since 1990 come January.
