A man and a woman have died following an incident at a hotel in Blackwood, south Wales in which police fired a Taser at a suspect.

Police were called to an incident at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel following reports a man was attacking a woman.

Officers said both the man and the woman were still at the scene when they arrived, but the woman later died from her injuries.

Police then fired a Taser at the male suspect before arresting him.

A Gwent Police spokesperson added: "Whilst under arrest, the man became unresponsive. Officers and paramedics administered first aid but he has since been pronounced deceased."

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and an investigation is underway.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
