Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed Chelsea legend Frank Lampard will join Manchester City on loan this summer.

The 36-year-old was released by the Blues following the expiry of his contract at Stamford Bridge after the end of the last season.

The England international recently completed his switch to Major League Soccer, where he signed for New York City FC.

The MLS season does not start till March 2015 and the franchise co-owned by City owners has helped them persuade Lampard to make a loan switch to Etihad. Chelsea make a trip to Manchester to face the Citizens in the Premier League clash.

The former Real Madrid boss says Lampard could face Chelsea in their league clash next month at the Etihad.

"He knows we have a very good team, we have a lot of players in his position. He is one player more. We have a lot of games particularly with the Champions League - so he's very important for our team," Pellegrini said.

"He is a player for Manchester City and he will play every game he needs to play," the City manager concluded.

Meanwhile, City midfielder and Lampard's compatriot James Milner is excited about the new season and is hoping to further improve in the upcoming campaign.

"City a great club to be with and I just want to contribute as much as I can. I played in important games at the end of last season and it was pleasing to help the team win trophies," Milner told City's official website.

"That's what it's all about; I want as many minutes as I can. Competition is tough, but when you get out there you have to go and help the team."

"We definitely have that at City, you test yourself every single day in training. You want to improve, you want to win trophies and think 'did I become the best player that I can?'"

"If you can't improve playing with these guys in the dressing room you are going to struggle anyway," he concluded.
