Overview
Cilic is the defending champion and will be hoping to win his second US Open title for the second year in a row. A victory on Sunday will see him seal a berth in the last eight of the tournament.
In the third round clash, Cilic had to fight hard against Mikhail Kukushkin as the course of the match was decided in the final set after both players won two sets each. Cilic had a comfortable final set to seal the match as the final score was 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Chardy defeated world No 7 David Ferrer to seal his berth in the round of 16 of the final Grand Slam of the year. The Spaniard bounced back in the second set to level the score. However, it was not sufficient as Chardy won the match 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The winner of the clash will face either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Benoit Paire as the latter two will face each other in the fourth round clash of this year's US Open. A victory for Cilic over Chardy could see him make it to the last four of the Grand Slam event.
