A British man on his honeymoon has been killed in a suspected hit-and-run in Mexico.

Ray Cottam died in the city of Cancun in a traffic smash, UK officials said.

Shocked friends of Yorkshire man Cottam, who was 55, described the biscuit factory worker as a "diamond."

He was on holiday with new wife Karen following the couple's wedding at a hotel near Pontefract, last weekend.

Grieving Karen cut short her trip to return home in the wake of the tragedy. She was being comforted by relatives at home in Middlestown.

Janet Barnes, 56, who used to work with Cottam at a fish and chip shop he ran, said she was rocked by his death.

"He was a diamond - a one in a million. He would do anything for anyone," she told the Yorkshire Post.

"Him and Karen were made for each other. It is a total shock and we still can't believe it."

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth office said: "We were made aware of the death of a British national in Cancun, Mexico, on 30 June.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
