Putin Looks at Floor and Taps His Feet as Modi Tells Him to End 'Endless War' in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin listened as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged him to move away from an 'endless war' in Ukraine and towards an end to the fighting, delivering a notable message from one of Moscow's closest strategic partners.

The exchange took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on 31 August during a meeting on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. Modi and Putin discussed bilateral relations alongside wider regional and international issues.

During Modi's remarks, Putin was seen looking down and tapping his feet. While the moment drew attention, his body language alone does not establish his thoughts or feelings about Modi's comments.

Modi Calls for an End to the Ukraine War

Modi used his opening remarks to emphasise the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts.

The Indian Prime Minister said the world needed to move from 'endless war' towards an end to the war, stressing the broader human consequences of continued fighting. He also reiterated India's support for efforts aimed at achieving peace.

The comments are significant because India has maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with Russia throughout the Ukraine conflict while repeatedly advocating dialogue as a route towards a settlement.

Modi has previously raised the importance of peace and diplomacy in discussions with Putin, making his latest remarks part of India's broader approach to the war.

Putin and Modi Maintain Close Strategic Ties

Despite their differing positions over the continuation of the Ukraine conflict, the meeting also focused heavily on the longstanding relationship between Moscow and New Delhi.

The Indian government said the leaders agreed to continue strengthening their 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership'.

India has maintained its relationship with Russia despite pressure from Western governments over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Russia remains an important source of energy and other economic ties for New Delhi.

Why Modi's Message Matters

India occupies a distinctive position in the Ukraine conflict because it has maintained communication with both Russia and countries seeking an end to the war.

Modi's latest comments underline New Delhi's stated preference for dialogue and diplomacy while preserving its strategic partnership with Moscow.

The meeting also highlights India's balancing act. New Delhi has continued cooperation with Russia while publicly calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The timing is also significant. The meeting came more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with fighting continuing despite repeated diplomatic efforts to secure a settlement.

Putin Set for Fresh India Visit

The relationship between Moscow and New Delhi remains active, with further high-level engagement expected.

Modi said he looked forward to welcoming Putin to India for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for 12 and 13 September 2026. The two governments have also agreed to continue strengthening their strategic partnership.

The Bishkek meeting combined a direct Indian appeal for an end to the Ukraine war with continued cooperation between two longstanding strategic partners.

For India, the approach allows Modi to publicly advocate diplomacy while maintaining close relations with Moscow, demonstrating the careful balance New Delhi continues to pursue over the conflict.
