A NASA image from Mars has reignited an old question online: are some of the strange patterns on the Red Planet really signs of life or movement there?

The photograph, captured by NASA's Curiosity roveron 19 May 2025, shows a dusty Martian landscape with a formation that some viewers say resembles a set of tyre tracks. The image resurfaced on social media this week, prompting renewed speculation about extraterrestrial activity.

The speculation focuses on markings that, from certain angles, look unusually regular. One social-media user asked whether they could be Curiosity's own tracks, while others argued that the pattern does not match the rover's known wheel marks.

A second image taken roughly two minutes later appears to show the same feature from another angle, adding fuel to claims that it is a physical formation rather than a camera or lighting artefact.

The viral image does not, of course, establish that an alien vehicle or intelligent life exists on Mars. NASA's actual Mars research remains focused on determining whether the planet once supported microbial life, and the agency has repeatedly stressed that unusual-looking formations require scientific analysis before they can be linked to biology.

What the Curiosity Rover Actually Photographed

The photograph was taken by NASA's Curiosity rover while it was exploring Gale Crater, where the vehicle has been investigating Martian geology and the planet's ancient environmental conditions since landing in 2012.

The resurfaced image shows rocky terrain, distant hills and a pattern in the dusty ground that some observers have compared with tyre tracks.

Kari Sivertzen, the social-media user who reposted the image on X, said her original interest was not necessarily an apparent vehicle track. She pointed instead to depressions in the surrounding terrain that she said could be consistent with ancient water activity or an impact.

That distinction is important because Mars' surface contains abundant geological features created by water, wind, impacts and erosion. Curiosity's mission is designed to study precisely those processes and establish whether Gale Crater once provided conditions suitable for microbial life.

Why Experts Say It Is Just Rocks, Not Rovers

The apparent tracks have attracted attention partly because some viewers believe they differ from Curiosity's own wheel impressions. According to the online discussion surrounding the image, the unusual pattern appears to have a central line and closely spaced marks that do not obviously resemble Curiosity's jagged, block-like tread pattern.

That observation, however, is not evidence of an extraterrestrial vehicle. An unexplained visual feature is simply an unexplained feature until scientists establish its origin.

NASA has encountered this problem repeatedly. Mars photographs have produced apparent faces, doorways, animals and other familiar shapes that later proved to be ordinary geological structures.

The phenomenon is known as pareidolia, in which the human brain recognises familiar patterns in ambiguous shapes. NASA has specifically used the famous 1976 'Face on Mars' image to explain how shadows and erosion can create remarkably convincing illusions.

The online excitement also comes at a time when NASA's search for ancient life on Mars has produced genuinely significant results.

NASA's Perseverance rover discovered unusual chemical and mineral features in a rock called Cheyava Falls in 2024. Scientists said the characteristics could be consistent with ancient microbial activity, while stressing that non-biological explanations remained possible.

NASA later described a sample from that rock as containing potential biosignatures. The term is crucial: a potential biosignature is something that could have a biological origin but requires additional evidence before scientists can conclude that life was responsible.

NASA's own explanation of the search makes the distinction clear. Perseverance is looking for physical and chemical evidence preserved in Martian rocks that could reveal whether life existed billions of years ago.

What NASA Is Actually Looking for in Ancient Martian Rock

Rather than demonstrating modern alien activity, the latest viral image highlights why Mars remains scientifically important.

Gale Crater and Jezero Crater both preserve evidence that liquid water once existed on Mars.

Jezero, the landing site of Perseverance, contained an ancient lake and river delta, making it one of the most promising locations for searching for preserved evidence of microbial life.

The difference between an intriguing photograph and a scientific discovery, therefore, comes down to evidence.

A strange pattern may generate thousands of social-media posts, but proving life existed on Mars requires measurements, chemical analysis, geological context and, ultimately, independent verification.

In a separate viral moment, a UFO researcher previously claimed to have spotted a mysterious doorway in NASA footage, but the same principles of pareidolia apply.

For now, the viral Curiosity image remains just that: an intriguing Martian photograph. It may inspire questions about what lies beyond Earth, but there is no evidence from the image that it shows alien life or an extraterrestrial vehicle.
