A woman, locked in a bathroom for almost a decade has been freed, Palestinian police said.

The 20-year-old woman had been locked in her West Bank home's bathroom for over nine years by her 49-year-old father.

Palestinian police spokesman Adnan Damiri said the woman was in a "deplorable" condition when she was found on Saturday, the AFP reported. It is remains unclear why she was locked up.

The father, an Arab citizen of Israel, was detained and handed over to Israeli police, the report further added.

Micky Rosenfeld, an Israeli police spokesman said the man, now in detention in an Israeli jail ahead of a court hearing later this week, is suspected of physically abusing his daughter.

The women's mother did not live with them has also been detained for questioning.

Police reportedly received a tip-off and heard calls for help from inside the bathroom when they entered the house.

They found the girl inside the bathroom, with a mattress and a blanket.
