Overview

Nadal has won the Monte Carlo Masters for eight consecutive times from 2005 to 2012. However, a dip in his form has allowed Novak Djokovic to win the tournament twice in the last three years.

The world number one was the defending champion and has been eliminated following his defeat to Jiri Vesely in the second round. This allows the Spaniard to improve his chance of winning the Monte Carlo Masters once again.

In the previous round, Aljaz Bedene was no match for Nadal as the latter registered a comfortable straight set victory in the second round. The scoreline was 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, his opponent Thiem came from the behind after losing the opening set to win the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 against Taro Daniel.
