Who Is Mello Buckzz — and Was She the Target of a Deadly Chicago Drive-By?
Was Rising Rapper Mello Buckzz the Intended Target of the River North Mass Shooting?

A fatal drive-by shooting outside the Artis Restaurant & Lounge in Chicago's River North shook a private album-release event for local rapper Mello Buckzz on 2 July when three gunmen in a black SUV opened fire into a crowd gathered outside, killing four people and injuring 14 others, with at least three in critical condition.
The Victims' Story
Police confirmed that the deceased included two women (aged 26 and 27) and two men (24 and 25). Among those shot were Mello Buckzz's boyfriend and her best friend.
Witnesses described a scene of panic and high emotion, with victims rushed to Northwestern Memorial and Stroger hospitals.
Was Mello Buckzz the Intended Victim?
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a law-enforcement source indicated that Mello Buckzz was likely the intended target, despite having left the venue before the shooting began.
The black SUV reportedly circled the venue before returning to unleash gunfire, signalling possible intent against her.
What Mello Buckzz Said
In emotional Instagram Stories, the rapper expressed deep sorrow:
'Prayers up for all my sisters God please wrap yo arms around every last one of them. ... feel like everything just weighing down on me... all I can do is talk to God and pray.'
She also shared memories of the victims, posting videos and photos that captured moments they shared together.

Patterns of Violence at the Venue
Artis Lounge occupies a venue with a troubled past. In 2022, when operating as Hush Lounge, a rival shooting occurred on the same block, later leading to its temporary shutdown by the city. Last night's tragedy suggests that this location remains a flashpoint.
City in Crisis Ahead of Fourth of July
Coincidentally, the shooting took place just before the Fourth of July weekend, which last year saw over 100 shootings and 19 deaths citywide. Though Chicago had seen a decline in gun violence since Memorial Day, the attack disrupted hopes for a quieter holiday period.
Investigation Underway with No Arrests Yet
Chicago Police confirmed that there are currently no suspects in custody. At least three shooters are believed to have fired from the vehicle before fleeing. Witnesses reported hearing around two dozen shots.
Music Under Siege
For the rising star Mello Buckzz, the night that should have celebrated her latest work turned into tragedy. Police are pursuing leads to uncover the motive and identify the gunmen. But questions remain: was the artist the prime target or did her loved ones pay the price instead?
