Alex Hales and Zafar Ansari are set to make their Test debuts after being named in the 16-man England squad to face Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Nottinghamshire opener Hales and Surrey spinner Ansari were also named in the one-day international Twenty20 squads, while James Taylor is also included and could make his first Test appearance in three years.

Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance have paid the price for their poor Ashes performances, dropping out of all three squads. Ben Stokes keeps his place in the Test squad but will sit out of the ODI and T20 series with England attempting to manage his heavy workload, as they did similarly with Joe Root in the ODI series against Australia. Root is welcomed back into all three squads after his rest.

England also announced that former ODI captain Paul Collingwood and former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene have joined the England set-up in consultancy roles. Jayawardene, who retired from international cricket this year, will take up a role as batting consultant to the Test squad for the first part of the tour of the UAE. Collingwood, meanwhile, will work with both limited overs squads.

England Cricket Board director Andrew Strauss said: "We are delighted that Mahela and Paul will be joining the England management team, supporting our existing specialist coaches in this area. Both will bring a vast wealth of cricketing knowledge and expertise to the team, and in Mahela's case, extensive experience of batting in the sub-continent, which will be invaluable as part of our wider preparations for the UAE tour."
