Algerian Asylum Seeker Arrested After Four Are Wounded Saving Woman in Sardinia Restaurant Knife Attack

An Algerian man reported to be seeking asylum in Italy was arrested in central Olbia, on the island of Sardinia, after four people were wounded while trying to free a woman allegedly held at knifepoint inside a crowded restaurant late on Friday, 4 September 2026, according to local reports.

One person was initially described as more seriously injured, but none was reported to be in a life-threatening condition.

The suspect allegedly entered the busy city-centre restaurant carrying a knife, approached the till and grabbed the woman working there. Two diners and two members of staff were wounded after intervening when he allegedly held the blade to her throat.

How the Suspect Was Stopped

The incident began near the till, where the suspect allegedly approached and seized the woman. The woman later said the suspect dragged her and asked her to call the police before he stumbled and they both fell. Diners and staff then intervened to help her and tried to disarm him.

Four people, comprising two diners and two members of staff, were wounded during the ensuing struggle. The reports reviewed did not identify the four injured people.

Emergency medical personnel treated the four injured people before taking them to Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in Olbia.

Three were reported to have sustained minor injuries, while one was more seriously wounded.

None was reported to be in a life-threatening condition. La Nuova Sardegna subsequently reported that the injuries were mainly to the limbs and that each person was expected to require around 10 days of treatment.

The incident occurred at the Ichi restaurant near the junction of Via Mameli and Corso Umberto I, close to a railway level crossing in central Olbia.

ANSA reported that the restaurant was busy with customers at the time. Police, Carabinieri and emergency crews attended, while investigators worked to reconstruct the sequence of events that night.

State Police and Carabinieri officers restrained the man and placed him under arrest. He was taken to hospital for medical checks before being held at Nuchis prison pending further court proceedings.

Police Investigate Motive for Sardinia Restaurant Attack

L'Unione Sarda reported that authorities accused the man of alleged offences including unlawful detention, inflicting serious injuries, making threats, resisting a public official and carrying a bladed weapon.

The report said a hearing to validate the arrest was scheduled for Monday morning and identified Maurizio Mani as his lawyer. The suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

La Nuova Sardegna reported that the Algerian national was legally present in Italy under a permit linked to an application for international protection.

Reports published on 5 September said police were investigating the circumstances and motive. The restaurant's owners said they had seen the man nearby but did not know him.

Police are investigating why the man allegedly entered the restaurant armed and approached the woman at the till. No previous dispute or known connection involving the suspect, the woman or restaurant staff has been publicly confirmed.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. No motive had been established at the time of publication.
