Overview

Defending Olympic champion Andy Murray comes into this clash on the back of 16 consecutive wins and is the favourite to clinch his second consecutive gold medal at the summer games. Murray, who cruised past his first two opponents, has had a harder time off late in the last couple of rounds.

The third round tie saw Italian Fabio Fognini take a set of the world number two, though Murray eventually fought back to win 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, it showed that there are still chinks in his armour which he has to eradicate. It was not a one off though, with the 29-year-old again looking a little shaky against USA's Steve Johnson in the quarter final, with Murray's backhand looking particularly weak as he scraped through 6-0, 4-6, 7-6.

With world number one Novak Djokovic knocked out, Murray will know that this is his best chance to win the much vaulted medal for the second time.

His opponent Kei Nishikori too had an easy start to the Rio 2016 Olympics only to face a roadblock in the form of Gael Monfils in the quarter final. Japan's most famous tennis player eventually survived the clash to win 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, a game which brought the usually composed Nishikori to tears.

Nishikori's fitness in regard to injury has always been an issue, but he has looked at his best so far in Rio de Janiero and what might be a slight advantage is that Murray has looked absolutely exhausted after playing two singles matches and two late-night doubles matches in the past two days.

Nishikori is not expected to progress to the final, but one should never underestimate him as he is capable of blowing away any opponent on his day.
