  • Both players missed the first leg of the Champions League semi-final due to injuries.
  • Diego Simeone's side need to overcome a 3-0 deficit to go through the final.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has been handed a double injury boost after both Juanfran and Jose Maria Gimenez returned to the training sessions ahead of the hotly expected visit of Real Madrid on Wednesday night (10 May).

Los Cholchoneros managed to put behind them last week's 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals by securing a 1-0 win over Eibar at the weekend to consolidate their third place in the La Liga table, just behind Los Blancos and Barcelona.

Juanfran and versatile Gimenez missed last week's disappointing defeat to their neighbours due to different injuries, forcing Simeone to cover the right-back with a centre-back like Lucas Hernandez as Šime Vrsaljko was also on the sidelines.

Juanfran is yet to play a game since being forced off during the 1-1 draw at Leicester City in the second leg of the Champions League last 16.

Meanwhile, Gimenez suffered a thigh injury in the 5-0 victory over Las Palmas on 29 April.

However, it looks like that at least one of the two defenders could give Simeone a much-needed boost for the second leg against Real Madrid as Atletico aims to make a historic comeback to go through the Champions League final.

The return of the Spanish international right-back to face Real Madrid would be especially important as it would provide Simeone the possibility to recover his strongest back-line by deploying him alongside Diego Godin, Stefan Savić and Filipe Luis to stop Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

Meanwhile, the Argentine boss has no fresh injury concerns, so Gabi, Koke, Saul Niguez, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Antoine Griezmann should be able to complete the rest of his line-up alongside either Kevin Gameiro or Fernando Torres in a 4-4-2 formation.
