Thibaut Courtois

Atletico Madrid are reportedly monitoring Liverpool loanee Pepe Reina should they fail to secure the services of Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international is currently enjoying his third successive on loan season at the Vicente Calderon Stadium where he has built a reputation as one of the finest shot stoppers in Europe.

The Spanish giant are desperately trying to secure his services on permanent basis or even through another loan but it is understood that manager Jose Mourinho wants him back in west London next season to fight for a place with Petr Cech.

Spanish newspaper AS reports that even though Atletico will make every effort to keep Courtois for at least one more season they have started the search for another keeper to prepare for life without the Belgian.

And in case Atletico fail to get Courtois, AS reports that their firt-choice replacement is Levante shot stopper Keylor Navas, who is proving to be a sensation in La Liga this season.

Pepe Reina is also in a short-list of candidates that includes Espanyol's Kiko Casilla, Wolfburg's Diego Benaglio and the Argentinian Geronimo Rulli.

Reina is currently on loan at Napoli and even though he has contract at Anfield until 2016, AS report that Brendan Rodgers is willing to part with him on permanent basis at the end of the season.

The Liverpool manager recently hinted that Reina's time on Merseyside has come to an end.

"He's already written his letter, hasn't he? He wrote a goodbye letter, didn't he? I was surprised at the letter - when you are a loan player I would expect that he should come back, but obviously Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli that he was looking to move," Rodgers said.
