A TV anchorwoman unwittingly shared news of her engagement with millions of viewers after reading from an autocue that had been tampered with by her boyfriend.

Jillian Pavlica, a presenter for Alabama's Fox54, got the surprise of her life when she read out: "We have some breaking news to report to you: Fox54 has just learned that a Huntsville news anchor is being proposed to on live TV right now."

She then stumbled over the words as it dawned on her that she was the "news anchor" in question.

Her boyfriend, Vince, who had been standing with the camera crew and autocue, then appeared on set and went down on one knee to pop the question.

A voice said over the programme credits: "Here in the Fox54 studio there's a 100 percent chance of a few tears of joy tonight."

The video has been viewed 125,000 times on YouTube and shared hundreds of time on Facebook.

One viewer wrote: "Sweet! Even after the proposal she was still trying to be professional by not holding her guy's hand. God bless you both."

Another viewer wrote: "But what about the news!"
