A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool in Spain while on holiday. Emergency services were called to the scene at Rocío del Mar complex resort in Torrevieja, on the south-east coast of Spain, after the child fell in the communal pool.

Paramedics attempted to revive the boy but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: "Following the death of a British national in Spain, we are providing support to their family. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

According to The Local, the British family had only recently arrived in the Costa Blanca resort near Alicante. Local police are investigating the incident.

Lupita Diaz, commercial advisor for Mahersol Group which manages apartments at one of the blocks, said the had only just reopened following maintenance over winter.

Diaz told the Press Association: "The pool had been closed over the winter. Tiles were changed or there was some kind of maintenance and it had just opened again. The area is very popular with tourists, many families. The beach is just 100 metres away."
